Data Scientist (Synthetic Populations)

Epistemix empowers leaders to make better decisions. Organizations use our data-science tools to manage risk, fight infectious disease, improve disaster response, adapt to climate change, compare strategies across scenarios, and better understand the people they seek to serve.

We are seeking a data scientist to build custom synthetic populations for our computational simulation platform. In coordination with our science and engineering teams, you will design, implement, and maintain synthetic populations for the United States and other countries. You will be expected to process Census data, integrate multiple data sources, and build models to generate synthetic population products. Synthetic populations may be for any country or location in the world. You will create tools and techniques for analyzing synthetic populations and simulations.

Responsibilities

  • Engage with science, product, and engineering teams to understand project specific synthetic population requirements..
  • Enhance the synthetic populations for the United States.
  • Collect and process data on workplaces, schools, neighborhoods, households, social networks, and information networks from public and private sources.
  • Develop and manage the process for building synthetic populations for countries around the world.
  • Develop Python (or R) packages to produce and analyze synthetic populations for use in FRED simulations.
  • Produce synthetic populations for countries throughout the world that can be sold as products and used for internal modeling projects.
  • Create high quality visualizations for marketing and productizing synthetic populations.

Qualifications

  • Master’s or Ph.D. degree in a quantitative field such as mathematics, demography, social science, computer science, physics, economics, engineering, or statistics. Equivalent industry experience will be considered in lieu of education.
  • 5+ years of experience with data analysis, preferably in Python or R.
    Experience supporting scientific research, data analytics, or work in other complex data-driven fields.
  • Experience collecting and processing complex data from varied sources.
  • Ability to build a project, tool, or package from the ground up.
    Familiarity with analyzing and visualizing geospatial data using Python, R, and graphical GIS applications.
  • A startup mentality and the ability to flex in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent analytical skills and the ability to craft actionable insights from complex data.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to craft powerful user stories and to convey complex topics to colleagues.
